Salamat! - A Tapulanga Foundation newsletter

Thank You for Your Kindness and Generosity!

Can you believe the year is half over?  Time sure flies especially when you’re busy…and we definitely have been! We thank all of YOU for your support and making our work possible.

“Takbo para sa Kabataang Pinoy '14”

A race organized by the Philippine Pediatric Society was held last April 6, 2014 at the SM Mall of Asia in Manila.  Entitled “Takbo para sa Kabataang Pinoy '14” (or “Run for the Youth”), the organizers had two beneficiaries and Tapulanga Foundation was lucky enough to be one of them.  Executive Director MicMic Abello-Golez, former President Robin Abello, our new President Dr. Jo-an Ledesma-Millonado, and past and present Board Members Lizzie Ledesma, Vicky Ledesma-Tanchanco and Jay Abello joined in the fun with their family and friends.  Funds received will be used towards the health care program of t he foundation.  Thank you, Philippine Pediatric Society!

“Cards For Charity Campaign”

Ever heard of that really popular game called “Cards Against Humanity”?  Well, one of our longtime supporters, Dr. Alvin Sanico, came up with his own game and called it “Cards For Charity!”  This clever card game allowed a player to form different words just by turning the letters upside down.  The Cards For Charity Campaign offered donors a free set of game cards for donations as small as $5.  The very successful campaign ran for six weeks and the beneficiaries were Boats for Busuanga and Tapulanga Foundation.  The campaign raised enough funds to provide scholarships and books to 10 Pre-Kindergarten kids and 10 boats to the Typhoon Haiyan victims of Busuanga.  Salamat, Alvin!

“75 Scholars in 30 Days Challenge”

The “75 Scholars in 30 Days Challenge” was definitely a challenge for us but we made it – and even exceeded our goal - because of your generosity.  This fundraising campaign was done solely online and it was definitely a testament of how much people believe in the power of education.  Because of YOU, we are blessed to welcome 100 new scholars to the school!  From the bottom of our hearts, we thank you for your support and trust.

There is more in store towards the latter half of the year as we strive with our commitment to give needy children a chance for a better life.  Stay tuned…and, as always, MADAMO GID NGA SALAMAT!

Embracing the Challenge

It’s the start of another school year. For one Tapulanga scholar who graduated at the top of his High School class, the coming school year promises to be an exciting and challenging one. Dominic Kyle Barnuevo is very fortunate to have been accepted into the BS Fisheries program of the University of Philippines Visayas-Miagao with a partial scholarship.

Kyle has spent his entire life in Silay City, Negros Occidental.  The thought of having to study in a university in a different province and of being away from his family for the first time was certainly daunting for Kyle.  Last May 15, Kyle had to take his first trip outside his home town in order to fulfill his pre-enrollment requirements.  Kyle admits that the experience of seeing the large university grounds, which will be his home for the next four years, was quite intimidating.  Although he knows that it will not be easy adjusting to his college life in this totally new and different campus, Kyle is committed to his decision to obtain his college degree in UP.  He is fully aware that he will be getting the best education in this prestigious university, which, in turn, will provide better opportunities for him in the future.

UP Visayas has granted Kyle 8O% subsidy on his tuition fees.  However, Kyle still needs financial assistance for the remaining 2O% of his tuition fee, his miscellaneous fees and board and lodging expenses.  Tapulanga Foundation is presently raising funds and looking for donors to help cover some, and hopefully all, of Kyle’s college education expenses for the next four years.

We salute Kyle for his ambition and determination to face this new adventure without hesitation.  Just as Kyle is embracing this challenge, Tapulanga Foundation is likewise embracing the challenge of supporting Kyle all the way, with the help of our generous donors.  Let us help Kyle create a better future for himself and his family.

“Embrace each challenge in your life as an opportunity for self-transformation.”

The Silay Summer Workshop Returns

The Silay Summer Workshop Returns

Two years after the last workshop, Tapulanga Foundation's Silay Summer Workshop is back on track this year, starting from April 3 to May 2, 2014. We had 145 students who joined the different classes offered -- basic and advanced painting and drawing, hip hop dance, basic and intermediate guitar, and sports camps in the field of basketball, volleyball, and football.

Basic Drawing and Painting Class with teachers Jojo Regollo and Ting Cristales

Advanced Drawing and Painting Class with teachers Jojo Regollo and Ting Cristales

Guitar Classes with teacher Jun Davo

Hip Hop Dance Class with teacher Champ Tipon

Girls Volleyball Camp with Coach Joevani Buenafe

Boys Basketball Camp with Coaches Zerlim and PJ Montillano

Girls and Boys Football Camps with Coach Junjun Villan

The culmination last May 2 at SFAS, attended by the kids, their parents, and instructors, featured the exhibit of the Basic and Advanced Drawing and Painting classes, dance numbers by the Hip Hop Dance class, and the group recital of the Basic and Intermediate Guitar class.  The sports camps had their own separate Friendly Games, held at the St. Francis of Assisi School Covered Court and Football Field.

The comeback of the Silay Summer Workshop was made possible by the assistance of Akubo Software, AY Foundation, the Aboitiz Foundation, and various donors and parents who had put their faith and trust in us. We also give our special thanks to our media sponsor, IECC Computers, and to our Divine God, for without His blessing, all of these would not have been possible.

2014 College Scholarship Grant Awardees

We have two new scholarship recipients this year!

The Klaus Pfaender College Scholarship is granted to Ivan Kent Tad-y, a soon-to-be chemical engineering student at the University of St. La Salle - Bacolod City. The scholarship namesake, Klaus Pfaender, and his wife Maricar Totengco, have been committed donors of Tapulanga Foundation's scholarship program for many years.

Two years ago, he held his 60th birthday celebration in Spain and, in lieu of gifts, asked his guests to donate to the Foundation. This effort led to a home theatre system and two aircon units in the AVR, and two new computers in the lab. Besides his college scholarship grants, he also sponsored ten scholars this year alone.

Our second recipient is Thalea Segaya, whose scholarship grant comes from a very generous, yet anonymous donor of the Foundation. Thalea plans to take up a degree in Education at Carlos Hilado Memorial State College (CHMSC).

Congratulations, Ivan and Thalea!

75 Scholars in 30 Days Challenge

Can you help us make a difference in the life of a child today?

The Tapulanga Foundation is gearing up for the new school year once again. Please join us by sponsoring a scholar and give them the gift of education for a year.

We have 75 new scholars ready to start school in June. They have passed their entrance exams and our challenge is to find a sponsor for these deserving students - all 75 of them.

For as little as $30 or Php1,250/month, you can send a scholar to school for a year. You will get to know your scholar personally through letters and 100% of your donation goes directly towards their education.

Please Join Us and make a Difference in a Child's life!

·          Donating from the Philippines

**This program ends on April 30, 2014. Please forward this to at least 3-5 friends and be a part of The 75 Scholars In 30 Days Challenge! Each donor will be acknowledged on our Facebook page along with a photo of their scholar. We are a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization - all donations are tax-deductible.**

An Update on the Yolanda Rebuilding Efforts

Dear friends,
We'd like to thank, once again, everyone who responded to our appeal last November to help rebuild the homes of families who were greatly hit by Typhoon Yolanda.
Rebuilding Homes

So far, we have finished repairs on the school's covered court roofing and at least 14 houses, and rebuilt 2 homes in Silay City.

We still have more homes to repair and/or rebuild, and proceeds from the Eat. Share. Love 2013 benefit dinner will be able to fix at least 20 more homes in a small community in Cadiz City (north of Silay).
Christmas Giving Program

We'd also like to thank everyone who took part and gave our scholars a Christmas package of toys, supplies, and even noche buena. Part of your donation funds the construction of a simple, 3-bedroom house for a family of four scholars!
Pureza DVDs available for purchase
Have you watched Pureza yet? The sugar industry of Negros Island is rich in history, and Jay Abello's 2012 documentary film, Pureza: The Story of Negros Sugar, gives us a glimpse of rise and fall of the province's sugarcane landscape in the 21st century.

It's the only full-length feature about Negros sugar, and now you can get a DVD copy for Php750 (excluding mailing cost for delivery outside Bacolod City). Please contact Mic Golez at 0998-173-2788 or mgolez@tapulanga.org.

For US residents, we have limited copies available, at $19.99 each (shipping included). Please visit www.tapulanga.org/pureza for more information about DVD purchases in the US.
