Tapulanga Garden's Vegetables Ready for Harvest

Tapulanga garden's crops are ready for harvest this summer!  Ms. Micmic Golez, Executive Director of the foundation, in photo shows some of the first harvests like tomatoes, eggplant, papaya and "alogbati" (a leafy vegetable).  Other crops being grown are squash, okra, string beans, malunggay, corn, sweet potato and monggo beans.

Tapulanga garden started in February of this year in preparation for the opening of a new school year this June.  Located in a vacant area in front of the high school building of St. Francis of Assisi School, an assortment of  vegetables are grown here to supply the needs of the Lunch Meal program of the foundation, where scholars, teachers and staff avail of free lunch the entire school year.  This summer, vendors have been buying the vegetables to sell in the market.

The garden is tended by Mr. Anecito Guanzon and high school scholars take turn every day in helping with some of the garden work like weeding and watering.

YOUR TAPULANGA FAMILY - A Year in Review

We have now ended another meaningful year in St. Francis of Assisi School of Silay City - full of experiences, learning and fun. We look back at what we have done and accomplished, with hearts full of love and gratitude. 

To all of you who have been a part of it, especially our donors, thank you for having been with us in thought, in word, and in deed.

Our 260 scholars have been blessed for a whole school year. We count our blessings in having donors who have committed to see through their scholars through a whole year of holistic education from SFAS.  

We are thankful in having donors who have provided free lunch meals and/or school supplies and books to our scholars, faculty and staff.  We are grateful in having donors who have donated school needs like books, laptops, etc. 

We feel honored in having donors who have shared their time with us, either attending foundation events or visiting the school.  And we are blessed in having a passionate and dedicated team of board members and staff who tirelessly serve the needs of the children.

Scholars' Summer Work Program

The high school scholars of Tapulanga Foundation continue to be productive on their summer break. The scholars help in some of the school work like covering and sorting of books in the library, gardening, cleaning of classrooms and repainting the chairs.

TF Awards Scholarship Grants to Public School Elementary Graduates

Tapulanga Foundation awarded 13 high school scholarships to students from Mambag-id Elementary School, Hawaiian Philippines Company Elementary School, Adela Elementary School and Cuaycong Elementary School.  

Congratulations to these students who recently graduated from 6th grade and are proceeding to Grade 7 Junior high school in St. Francis of Assisi School of Silay City this coming June.

The scholarship program started two years ago with Adela Elementary School only but Tapulanga Foundation decided the year later to extend the program to other neighboring public schools.  St. Francis of Assisi School would give entrance tests in English and Math to the top 15 students of the Grade 6 class and those who pass the test (and qualify as a scholar) are offered 4-year Junior high school scholarship grants to study in St. Francis of Assisi School.  Most of the beneficiaries of the scholarship are class Valedictorians and Salutatorians of their graduating class.

We have 50 new scholars ready to start school in June. They have passed their entrance exams and our challenge is to find a sponsor for these deserving students - all 50 of them. 

For as little as $30 or Php1,250/month, you can send a scholar to school for a year. You will get to know your scholar personally through letters and 100% of your donation goes directly towards their education.

18 Tapulanga Scholars Graduating this Month

SFAS Class 2013

18 Tapulanga Foundation scholars are set to graduate in high school next week, comprising slightly more than half of the graduating students of St. Francis of Assisi School.  As career orientation talks were given and college visits were made by these students during the school year, many of them have envisioned a clear career path for themselves.

Their chosen careers range from being teachers such as specializations in Early Childhood and Elementary Education.  The Engineering Sciences have also been a choice for a number of scholars, as many have identified, Mechanical, Civil and Marine Engineering for their career options. 

Having been blessed with good preparatory education has certainly emboldened our scholars to look towards these careers although they know that these require heavy loads of study and serious hard work. 

We thank their 18 sets of donors who have helped them through these years of preparatory education at St. Francis of Assisi School.  Someday, as successful men and women in the world of education, engineering and other fields, 18 special professionals will look back with gratitude on their donors who threw their hats into the ring with them and helped them finish their pre-College studies.

“BIONIC” Donor Comes to Town

Marilyn Bernasol, a Grade 7 student and on her first year in St. Francis of Assisi School, is one lucky kid.  When she graduated Valedictorian from Cuaycong Elementary School, she received a scholarship grant from Tapulanga.  Her donor was a first time donor who signed up last April in Tapulanga’s 35 Scholars in 35 Days Challenge. 

Lucky girl, indeed, but that is not the end of the story!

How would you feed if you find out that your donor is the only person in the world with batteries in his chest wired to his brain?  That’s what Marilyn’s donor is.  And she actually came face to face with him!

She met Jess Villanueva, her donor, when he came to town from Phoenix, Arizona last month.  Married and with three children, Tito Jess suffered from labored speech because of Dystonia.  His symptoms abated because of deep brain stimulation which came as an effect of the unique wiring system from his chest to his brain.  He is currently a test subject, making him the single one in the world’s population set-up like this.

Tito Jess has become Marilyn’s inspiration, as she has seen, in real terms, how one person has refused to let physical obstacles prevent him from continuing to live according to God’s beautiful plan for his life.  And most of all, how one person refused to let physical obstacles prevent him from continuing to give and share.
